New York City Ballet Review From the Vail International Dance Festival

Did you know that August is a peak month for Vail Colorado activities? There’s something special happening every day and that’s on top of the spectacular wildflower hikes and other outdoor pursuits this summer.

For instance, The Vail International Dance Festival kicked into high gear this past Sunday, beginning with two evenings of mesmerizing dance compliments of New York City Ballet. Monday night featured 21st Century repertory and we’re happy to report that NYCB’s hallmark passion, speed and athleticism were still very much on display. George Balanchine, the company’s founder, particularly prized American energy and modernity – most of the dancers are American born and bred.

Wow went the crowd over Lauren Lovette, a rising star who joined the company only recently. Cool and elegant, she reminded us of the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie siren, holding her own alongside grand dame Wendy Whelan. At 45 years old, Ms. Whelan still has what it takes –ethereal in After the Rain it was hard to believe she was of this earth.

The dance festival runs for two weeks, but days in Vail fly by – jump on tickets right away to tonight’s performance, which features Mark Morris Dance Group at the incomparable outdoor Ford Amphitheater. Popular for his pairing of eclectic pieces showcasing live music and sharp wit, Mark Morris is locally well-known dance pro Colin Meiring’s favorite choreographer! Only a couple of days ago, esteemed critic Alistair Macaulay of the New York Times wrote, “… Mr. Morris is one of the great artists of our time.” See what the dance group has planned for the audience this evening.

If you can’t make the performance tonight, consider an overnight stay or two in Vail to catch another show; lots of lodges are offering specials right now – the final night of dance is Saturday, August 13 and tickets are still available, though going fast!
