Fly Fishing Conditions in Vail/Beaver Creek are Outstanding

Friday, August 26, 2011
Hey folks, the weather is absolutely perfect here in Eagle County -- the Vail/Beaver Creek, Colorado area -- right now. After a crazy run-off season, the rivers are perfectly clear and our beloved fly fishing is hot-hot-hot.

Here's what Mark Sassi, fly fishing guide extraordinaire at Gore Creek Fly Fisherman, has to say today about current conditions:

Gore Creek

The Gore Creek is as clear as it could ever be and the fly fishing is really on fire. Remember that with clear water you can encounter spooky fish and need to use finer tippet and smaller flies along with being much stealthier when approacing the river. This entire late Summer and early Fall should yeild some fantastic results in terms of quality and quantity of fish.

Eagle River

The clarity on the Eagle is perfect and we could all use a touch of rain to cool off the ground and promote the terrestrial activity. The only time you will encounter dirty water is after a good rain storm and the Eagle blows out below Alkali and Milk Creek. These creeks are feeder creeks and after rain they pump mud into the rivers, but only for a short time. Plan on wade fishing this weekend and every chance you get between now and when snow flies because its so good. Fish with a Dry/Dry set up with a Hopper/Mayfly somewhere in the mix. It is working so well. Spend your dry fly time fishing smaller mayflies followed by the influx of hoppers since hopper season is upon us.

Colorado River

The river has settled and it is now lights out fly fishing. The Colorado River always has a light green stain to it. Never expect to see the Colorado completly clear up. The light stain actually is a blessing because it allows the angler to fish with larger diameter leaders and tippet.
