  • Fishing in the Vail Valley is wonderful with Gore Creek running through the town into the Eagle River which empties into the Colorado River farther down valley.  Fly fishing and spin fishing is great nearly all year around.  Before you go fishing, bookmark this page and check here first to check current river flows and conditions for fishing in the Vail Valley.

Data provided daily by Gore Creek Fly Fisherman
     Gore Creek
    Water Flows: 175 c.f.s.
    Water Temperature: 34° F
    Fishing Quality: fair
Water Clarity: Spring has hit full force and the rivers are fishing quite well. Clarity is gently effected mid day with a bit of run off but the water is pretty clear most of the day and the fishing is very good. Spend some alone time with your friends or with a fly fishing guide and mix up your day a bit and go fly fishing. The quality of Spring fishing will surprise you. Be sure to use small tippet and long leaders and when the clarity gets off color shorten your leader and use larger diameter tippet.
    Hot Flies:
Tips: Recently lots of Midge hatches have been keeping fishermen busy.Fishing sub-surface with nymphs and emergers will still be most effective. On overcast days you can throw a small midge dry in sizes 20-26 and colors of either black or grey. Be careful when wading.Have fun and fish safe from Gore Creek Fly Fisherman and call 970-476-3296 with any questions.

     Eagle River
    Water Flows: 594 c.f.s.
    Water Temperature: 34 @ Wolcott° F
    Fishing Quality: good
Water Clarity: A week plus of warm weather gave way to a bit of lower level snow melt and run off which dirtied up the river just enough to use bigger tippet and still catch fish. All the usual access points that we may fish in the summer are accessible right now. The clarity on the Eagle has been stained the past week due to a bit of warmth and snow melt but not so stained that it effects the fishing. You can approach the river a bit more aggressively than when its clear. ALso The fish aren't so likely to get spooked by your presence if they cannot see or sense you. Just tread lightly.
    Hot Flies:
Tips: I recently fished with an egg pattern trailed with a Johnny Flash Emerger in grey size 20 and switched it out with a Sassi's Solution size 20 and caught fish on all three patterns. This time of year expect to see very few hatches except for midges so spend 95% of your fishing time using nymphs and emergers sub-surface. We are in the middle of early winter conditions so wait until the day has a few hours to warm up,(10-11am) which will also warm up the water just enough to wake the fish up and put them in search of thier next meal. Wade with caution and good luck and as long as you dress properly you can't help but have a great day on the river. Give Gore Creek a call at 970-476-3296 with any questions or stories you would like to share with us.

     Colorado River
Water Flows: 477 (at Kremmling) c.f.s.
    Water Temperature: 36 @ Kremmling° F
    Fishing Quality: fair
Water Clarity: If the Colorado is your mission I suggest access down river towards Glenwood Springs and even further West. Lots of warmer weather tends to promote hatches of midges on a regular basis. The upper river is just about to float real good. Keep aware of the flows, any spikes in the flows or any sporadic drops in flows. Any dramatic changes in levels can effect the fishing.
    Hot Flies:
Tips: Wait until mid-morning before you run to the river giving it time to warm up a bit and wake the fish up. Dont plan on seeing much along the lines of hatches except for tiny midges and if dry fly fishing with sizes 22-28 is not your thing then spend your time fishing with nymphs and emergers under the surface. You will have much better luck catching fish. Long leaders with fine(6x) tippet is the call for any river any time right now. Good luck from Gore Creek Fly Fisherman and call 970-476-3296 with any questions.
